Vilanova i la Geltrú
 
 

Vilanova i la Geltrú is a Mediterranean town situated 45km south of Barcelona and 45km north of Tarragona. It belongs to the province of Barcelona and is only 20 minutes from Prat International Airport (Barcelona). It has a modern rail and road network linked by the motorways C-32 (A-16), and E-15 (A-7) and the C-31 (C-246) road from Vendrell and the C-15 (C-244) from Vilafranca del Penedès.

Vilanova, with a population of 55.000, is the capital of Garraf, with neighbouring towns Sitges (7 km.), Sant Pere de Ribes, Cubelles, Canyelles and OIivella.

The town has a notable artistic and cultural history. Among the many attractions are the following museums: Museo Biblioteca Víctor Balaguer, the Museo Romántico Casa Papiol, the Museo del Ferrocarril and the Museo de Curiosidades Marineras. The town also has a Polytechnic (Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña) and a Technology Centre both part of the University Polytechnic of Catalonia (UPC).

The beaches in the town are extensive and well looked after with all the essential services and facilities. The port in Vilanova i la Geltrú is the third largest in Catalonia combining sporting activities with commercial and fishing fleets (it is the base for one of the biggest fishing fleets in the Mediterranean).

The gastronomic variety in the town is quite exceptional. There is a continual economic and urban development with the service industries playing a predominant role. It has a strong construction sector, industry and all the primary services.
